The campus of Macalester College is bisected by Grand Avenue, requiring Macalester students to cross this street several times a day. Macalester College hired LSA Design to study the location and frequency of pedestrian crossings on Grand Avenue and to create a safer pedestrian crossing. The potential conflict between pedestrians and vehicles along this block has been a long standing discussion between Macalester College, nearby residences and businesses, and the City of St. Paul. LSA Design and Macalester College were successful in proposing a raised median design that was acceptable to all parties. The median was installed the summer of 2004 and provides a safe two-stage pedestrian crossing.
